Have you ever quickly regretted accepting a job when you found out they are not paying you enough salary? A study by Gartner among about 3,500 workers found that nearly 70% don’t think they are paid fairly.
To get the salary you want, you must know your worth and be confident enough to ask for what you deserve.
Here are 6 things you can do to have a fair salary:
1. Know your work value.
Check out salary.com and payscale.com to determine how much people in your job and area are making. Call a few headhunters and ask how much do they usually pay for someone with your experience. Don’t forget to ask friends with similar jobs what their pay looks like.
2. Be confident.
Know and stick to your absolute bottom line. If someone makes you an offer for less, don’t feel like you have to accept it. Try to talk your way into a better deal. If you can’t, you should be ready to leave. If your boss pays you less than you are worth, they will also mistreat you in other ways.
3. Don’t talk about how much you make now or in the past.
Some jobs will ask you how much you make now or what you’ve made in the past. You don’t have to give an answer. In fact, this question is against the law in some places. If you have to, turn the question around and ask how much the company pays for the job you’re applying for. If they keep asking, tell them, “I’m open to a reasonable offer.”

4. Talk about your pay.
An agent for a company will try to pay you as little as possible while you will try to get as much as you can. Be ready to talk and find a middle ground if you have to.
5. Be willing to walk away.
It’s much easier to stand your ground when you’re ready to leave a deal that doesn’t work for you. Don’t be afraid to drop out of the running if a company doesn’t really care about the work you do.
6. Know your worth.
Don’t be afraid to turn down a deal that seems too low. You will find a job that meets or beats your salary goals if you look around more and talk to people.
