Hard Skills: How to Include Them on Your Resume

What Are Hard Skills?

You may also hear technical skills used to refer to hard skills. They are knowledge that can be measured and are important to a particular business or job. Most of the time, they are not native knowledge. Instead, they are taught and can be tested or proven true. Hard skills are important because they show how well you can do tasks, finish projects, and do well in your work. There are different groups of hard skills, such as the ones below:

  • Analytical

If you have analytical skills, you can solve challenging problems, look at data, and make quick choices. Analytical knowledge include things like being able to look at finances, use statistics to create models, and look at data.

  • Technical

Technical skills are specific to a particular technology, software, or tool. For instance, knowing how to use Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, or computer languages like Python.

  • Project Management

The ability to plan, budget, and manage time for a project. These knowledge show that you can lead teams well and handle complex jobs.

How to List Them on Your Resume

Putting hard skills on your resume is a must if you want to get the attention of hiring managers. Here are a few pointers:

  • Add an expertise section

You can talk about your hard skills all over your resume, but putting them in a separate section makes it easier for companies to notice them. You can put them in groups like “certifications,” “language,” or “technical.”

  • Use action verbs

Action verbs get right to the point and show employers what you can do. Strong action verbs indicate that you know how to do certain things well. For example, “used Magento to build an online store.”

  • Quantify your accomplishments

When you quantify your accomplishments, hiring managers can see how successful the job you were in charge of was. For example, “Search engine optimization raised the number of organic views by 40%.”

  • Provide your certifications

Your possible employer will need to check your credentials, but it’s still a good idea to list them. Certificates for your hard skills show you know how to do those things well.

  • Relevant knowledge

All knowledge are important, but it doesn’t make sense to talk about hard skills that have nothing to do with the job. Read the job description to find out what knowledge the company is looking for, then match your expertise to the job.

Don’t be afraid to put your hard skills at the top of your resume. They are a valuable tool that can give you an edge over others looking for the same job.
