What is a genetic counsellor?

Genetic counsellor helps patients and their families understand and make informed decisions about a range of genetic conditions.

Genetic Counsellor responsibilities include:
  • Assessing family and medical history and counselling patients and families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects

  • Discussing the benefits and limitations of genetic testing options

  • Assisting families in understanding genetic disorders in their families

Job brief

We are searching for a genetic counsellor to join our team so that they can assist patients in understanding the risks related to various diseases and assist in evaluating data to determine whether patients need to undergo testing.

Patients’ medical histories are reviewed, consultations with patients are held, and patients and family members who could be at risk for specific genetic illnesses are identified. 

In the end, you will work closely with patients to assist people and families in understanding the risk associated with different genetic illnesses and deciding if they require testing.

Responsibilities
  • Review documents in patient charts and develop follow-up recommendations for patients

  • Develop and present educational and related programs as appropriate

  • Coordinate and support the execution of research protocol as needed

  • Perform associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities

  • Teach and supervise training activities of residents and/or other health care professionals

Requirements and skills
  • Proven work experience as a Genetic Counselor or similar role

  • Ability to apply counselling methods and techniques

  • Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client

  • Knowledge of human genetic disorders and birth defects

  • Ability to use independent judgement and to manage and impart confidential information

  • Ability to counsel patients and/or families in life management and coping skills

  • Relevant training and/or certifications as a Genetic Counsellor

Salary range

The salary range for a genetic counsellor is between RM 5,100 to RM 11,500.
