AI and Robot Job Displacements Causing Income and Identity Loss

AI and Robot Job Displacements Causing Income and Identity LossSome people are afraid that robots and artificial intelligence will eventually replace human labor because of their growing sophistication and advancement.

AI and robots are already automating jobs in practically every industry. Including manufacturing, data analysis, customer service, and administration, in today’s changing employment environment. Currently, routine and repetitive tasks are most amenable to automation.

It’s unlikely that robots and AI will eliminate all jobs, even though they will surely alter the nature of labor. Jobs needing particular human abilities and human-AI collaboration will probably take centre stage. A combination of universal basic income, paid employment, and a renewed emphasis on finding fulfilment and meaning outside of established job structures may characterize the nature of work in the future.

The Workplace Of The Future

Creativity, critical thinking, social skills, pressure-free problem-solving, and the capacity to deal with unforeseen circumstances are all necessary for many vocations. Given the limitations of AI at the moment, these categories demonstrate the ongoing need for human skills in work duties.

But a lot of jobs will probably alter, requiring new skill sets to work well with AI tools. AI and humans will collaborate in the workplace of the future, utilizing one another’s advantages. For instance, accountants may employ AI to analyze data. However, they will still need to apply human judgment when making complex decisions in their work.

There will likely be an increase in new positions related to data security, robot upkeep, artificial intelligence, human interaction, and emotional intelligence to assist close the gap.

Elon Musk’s Take On The Impact Of AI

Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, and co-founder and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, thinks AI will have a more profound and revolutionary effect. According to him, AI is “the most disruptive force in history.”

Musk predicted that AI will eventually render workers redundant during a speech at the Viva Technology conference in Paris in May. He doesn’t necessarily think this is a bad thing.

The software entrepreneur presents what he calls a possible “benign scenario” for the future of work. Extremely sophisticated AI skills would eliminate the need for human labor, making traditional occupations redundant.

Work would cease to be a need and instead become voluntary, like hobbies. According to Musk, people labor purely out of personal curiosity or creative fulfilment rather than in order to exist.

However, since employment provides people with a feeling of purpose and identity that they may lose, this begs the question of how humans might find meaning in life.

AI’s potential to make some people economically obsolete could have a serious negative impact on their mental health because these people derive their sense of value from their work and productivity. However, it can present a chance for them to embark on side projects, voluntary work, or entrepreneurship.

Musk stated that in order for labor to become optional, we would need to live in an “age of abundance” brought about by “universal high income.”

Universal Basic Income

Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist, however, presents a completely different image. The self-dubbed “Godfather of artificial intelligence” told the BBC that if automation causes a large-scale loss of jobs, the government would need to impose universal basic income as a safety net.

Hinton claimed that the advantages of AI and higher productivity would accrue to the wealthy. At the same time, those who lost their jobs would suffer, which would be “very bad for society.”

Similarly, UBI should be paid to Americans in order to give them a livable wage, according to former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang. Yang said that millions of Americans would be outcompeted and unable to hold respectable jobs if technology took over.

2020 saw Blockhead and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey predict that pretty soon, AI will write better code than his current software engineers on a podcast with Yang. Tech will eat everyone’s lunch, according to Dorsey’s prediction, and nobody will be safe.

The Significance Of Flexibility And The Purpose Of Labor

The prohibitively high cost of delivering cash payments at a level high enough to have a significant impact on inequality and poverty is one of the main complaints levelled about UBI.

The capacity to pick up new abilities and adjust to change will be essential in the future. Upskilling and constant learning will be necessary to remain competitive in the labor market.
